Reports: Senate President Sweeney kept spending Gloucester freeholder campaign funds after stepping down

TRENTON — Senate President Stephen Sweeney stepped down as Gloucester County freeholder director at the end of last year, but his campaign bank account had plenty of life left.

For months after leaving office, the Democrat continued to spend money from the account, including more than $12,000 for political dinners at restaurants ranging from Charlie Browns to Bobby Flays Steak at The Borgata in Atlantic City, according to campaign finance reports.

Sweeney left office on Dec. 31, 2010. Since then, he has spent more than $80,000 from the account, including donations to political candidates and charities, the reports show. <

Three-year-old Belleville boy dies in crash, was sitting on lap of passenger

ST. CLAIR COUNTY A three-year-old boy from Belleville was killed in a one-vehicle accident Surday afternoon in St. Clair County.

Illinois Ste Police said the boy, Taiseer Noubani, was being held on the lap of a passenger in the rear passenger se shortly after noon when he was thrown from the vehicle when it failed to negotie a curve and the van lost control, landing on top of the boy.

Police said a mini van, driven by Lma E. Awwad, 23, of Belleville, was going east on on North Belt West, just east of Illinois Route 13, when it failed to negotie a curve and entered the oncoming lane. The driver over-corrected and caused the van to spin out and go off the road, police said.

Murder charge over Christchurch death

LATEST: A 54-year-old man has been charged with murder following the suspicious death of a woman in Spreydon.

The body of a 47-year-old woman was found at a Cobham St home yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Murton said her death was being treated as a homicide and a man would appear in Rangiora District Court this morning.

Murton said the scene examination of the property would continue this morning by ESR scientists and police.

They were expected to remain at the scene for several days.

An autopsy would be carried out later this week. Murton said the identity of the victim would not be released until family were notified.

Gov. Christie won’t enter presidential race, his brother insists

ST. LOUIS — Members of Gov. Chris Christie’s inner circle said today he won’t run for president, batting down increased speculation that spiked on Monday when former Gov. Tom Kean said Christie was thinking about throwing his hat in the ring.

Christie’s brother, a well-connected Republican fundraiser, said the governor hasn’t changed his mind.

“I’m sure that he’s not going to run,” Todd Christie said. “If he’s lying to me, I’ll be as stunned as I’ve ever been in my life.”
