“Can a Playground be too Safe?” The New York Times looks at this question in an article that ran yesterday, and finds that the most frequently cited factor in the disappearance of the old tall jungle gyms and slides from most American playgrounds across the country in recent decades is fear of lawsuits.

Current New York City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe says, “What happens in America is defined by tort lawyers, and unfortunately that limits some of the adventure playgrounds.”

The article also explains how the lack of adventure can impact a child’s psychological development.
