Several years and $68 million later, a new federal courthouse in Jefferson City has officially been named for former Missouri Sen. Christopher “Kit” Bond.
At a ceremony Tuesday, Bond said the new courthouse was sorely needed to accommodate the caseload and improve security. The old courthouse shared a building with the U.S. Postal Service, and judges, jurors and criminal defendants all shared an elevator to get to the second-floor courtrooms.
Bond was instrumental in getting federal funding for the new building, which is on the site of a former state penitentiary overlooking the Missouri River.
The first trial was held at the new courthouse in August. President Barack Obama signed legislation Friday officially naming it after Bond.
