Amount In Controversy Is Not A Prospective Assessment Of Defendant’s Liability

Denying the motion to remand, a District Court in California opined that the amount in controversy is simply an estimate of the total amount in dispute, not a prospective assessment of defendant’s liability.

The plaintiff, for herself and on behalf of other employees of Sodexo, Inc. and SDH Services West, LLC, brought this class action seeking, among other things, unpaid wages and penalties under California Labor Code.

Jerry Brown Nominates Goodwin Liu for CA Supreme Court

CJAC would like to congratulate Goodwin Liu, a University of California-Berkeley law professor, for his nomination to the California Supreme Court, announced this morning by Governor Brown.

Liu would replace Carlos Moreno, who retired earlier this year.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A Central Indiana woman was in for a surpirse when a social worker called to say her 1-year-old daughter applied for a job. How? Because someone stole her social security number.

She got the call from out of the blue. The caller on the line, was her social worker.

“She said, Ms. Williams, I heard your 1-year-old daughter applied for job,” said Williams. “I said how is she going to have a job she is only one?”

This is possible because someone stole her daughter’s Social Security Number. The mysterious person applied for a job 50 miles away in Ogden, Indiana.

US Financial Figure Accused of Sexually Assaulting Employee at New York Hotel

Mahmoud Abdel-Salam Omar, chairman of a salt company and a big financial figure in the U.S. market has been accused and arrested by the New York Police Department on the charges of sexually abusing an employee at the Pierre Hotel in Manhattan. Omar is accused with sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment and harassment. This is the next big sexual abuse case after the Strauss Kahn arrest which was in the news a few days ago.


Michele Bachmann Comes Out Swinging

WASHINGTON Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann came out swinging against Tim Pawlenty on Sunday, in a sign that the former Minnesota governor’s presidential campaign may be seen as a growing threat despite his lackluster standing in the polls.

In a statement released by her campaign Sunday, Bachmann slammed Pawlenty’s positions and defended her own track record in Congress.

“Executive experience is not an asset if it simply means bigger and more intrusive government,” she said.

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” earlier this month, Pawlenty had described Bachmann’s congressional record as “nonexistent.”
