Man charged with string of Botanical Heights neighborhood break-ins

ST. LOUIS  A St. Louis man has been charged in a string of home burglaries on Blaine and McRee avenues in the Botanical Heights neighborhood.

According to charges, there were six break-ins in November and December, split evenly between the two streets. Police say Harrell Birts, 17, of the 400 block of Whittier Street, confessed th he and others were responsible and had been carrying pistols.

Birts has been charged with 12 counts of burglary and stealing. A judge ordered him held on $150,000 bail.


Asil Nadir ‘used stolen money to secretly boost Polly Peck share price’

Much of the £150m allegedly stolen by Asil Nadir from the Polly Peck conglomerate he ran throughout the 1980s went to finance his personal stake in the company as part of a covert effort to boost the value of the group’s shares, a court heard on Tuesday.

The former Polly Peck executive chairman denies 13 counts of theft. His prosecution by the Serious Fraud Office had been due to take place in 1993, but Nadir stunned the legal and City establishment by leaving for Northern Cyprus where he has lived until his return to the UK almost two years ago.

Philip Shears QC, for the prosecution, told a jury at the Old Bailey each penny increase in the price of Polly Peck increased the value of Nadir’s properly disclosed 25% stake in the group by £950,000. H

Kim Dotcom denied bail again

Internet piracy-accused Kim Dotcom has been remanded in custody.

He will be held in custody until February 22, when extradition papers are expected to be filed.

The decision was reserved since Monday, when after a day of legal ping pong in the North Shore District Court, judge David McNaughton decided he needed more time.

Dotcom, a German millionaire and founder of file-sharing site Megaupload was arrested on Friday on behalf of United States authorities in an FBI-led police raid at his $30m Coatesville mansion.

US authorities are now seeking his extradition.

They allege Dotcom’s company breached copyright laws costing copyright owners more than US$500m in what they call the “Mega Conspiracy”.

Steve Jobs’ Widow Will Sit With First Lady

The State of the Union speech itself may not have the same grand aura of addresses of old, but at least the crowd sitting with Michelle Obama is turning out to be an interesting bunch. Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Steve, will be with the first lady, and the White House bio stresses her own accomplishments, notes the San Francisco Chronicle. That includes her work as founder of the Emerson Collective, which is “focused on harnessing the potential of individuals from underserved communities to help them build a better life,” says the White House.

Also there will be the guy who co-founded the photography app company Instagram, Mike Krieger.

Elizabeth Warren’s ‘money bomb’ fundraiser to coincide with Scott Brown’s campaign kick-off

Following in the footsteps made popular by Republican Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s supporters, Harvard Law professor Elizabeth Warren and her campaign have coordinated a money bomb fundraising event to take place on Jan. 19, the same day Republican Sen. Scott Brown is holding an event in Worcester to kick-off his bid to keep his Senate seat.

The date is symbolic to Brown as two years prior, it was on that night Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley conceded defeat, paving the way for a Republican to hold the seat previously held by Democrat Edward Kennedy for 46 years.
